PoMo, Trondheim’s new museum for modern and contemporary art, recently opened in February 2025, to much anticipation, quickly establishing itself as one of the most exciting cultural events in recent years. Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, the museum blends rich heritage with cutting-edge design. Featuring striking interiors by India Mahdavi and Erik Langdalen, PoMo is already becoming a landmark in Trondheim. With world-class exhibitions and bold architectural vision, it is redefining Norway’s cultural scene and has quickly become a must-visit destination for art and design enthusiasts from around the world.
The stunning central helical stair, part of the colorful interiors designed by architect India Mahdavi, in collaboration with Norwegian architect Erik Langdalen, features The Light Lab’s Glowrail LED handrail in a custom powder-coated finish, with direct commission from Trondheim Stål AS and project partners Skanska Norway.
The handrail was powder-coated in a bold orange to precisely match the orange steel walls of the stairwell, creating a seamless integration with the space’s industrial aesthetic.
To ensure an impeccable fit, The Light Lab carried out a first fix of brackets into 11mm steel, giving our installers the setting-out points to survey from ahead of fabrication, guaranteeing a precise build.
The complex and unusual compound radii of the stair, presented a challenge compared to a more standard helical design, which our team overcame through meticulous planning and custom fabrication. By developing bespoke, flexible mounting solutions, we ensured that the Glowrail handrail followed the intricate curves of the stair perfectly, even in the tightest sections. This involved careful adjustment of the radii on the brackets and ensuring that the LED fixtures aligned seamlessly across the varying angles, maintaining both aesthetic continuity and full illumination.
Custom brackets were also designed and powder-coated in orange to match, with a clean, minimalist look that eliminates cover plates for a sleek finish.
The result is a striking lighting solution that enhances the space by blending form, function, and cutting-edge design. Focusing on smooth transitions that follow the contours of the stair, ensuring full illumination even on extremely tight radii, and creating a seamless, continuous diffused Glowline.
