Lighting Designers 18 Degrees were shortlisted in the ‘leisure project of the year’ category in this year’s Lighting Design Awards, for the Boulevard Theatre Project. The Light Lab manufactured + installed our bespoke timber finish LED handrail ‘Glowrail’ as part of 18 Degree’s lighting solution for the theatre refurbishment by Soda Studio. Other projects in the category include the The WuLong LanBa Moss Museum by BPI & The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience | Speirs + Major.
2019
The Light Lab were shortlisted in the lux awards 2019, in the ‘Outdoor Lighting Project of the Year’ category as part of the ‘Mercer St Art Installation, St Martin’s Courtyard’. We realised the initial concept & design of Brimelowe McSweeny Architects & lighting designers Studio 29, to manufacture and install a unique mirror polished stainless steel ceiling-with a vinyl covered poly-carbonate wall, back-lit with LED colour spot/floodlights, to offer shadow and projected effects through the walkway – leading into St Martin’s Courtyard.
2019
A bespoke lighting feature by The Light Lab, installed in the ceiling of a patient assessment room in the A&E department of the newly refurbished Charing Cross Hospital, has been shortlisted for the design in mental health awards 2019 – in the ‘Art Installation of the Year’ category. The installation, entitled ‘Wellbeing in Crisis’ is a backlit high output, low resolution ceiling light feature, comprising of different scenes inspired by nature, including clouds and the moon in the night sky, all programmed & controlled by the latest SPI technology. Working to an initial design concept by researcher/architect William Wang, in collaboration with clinical consultant Dr. Barbara Cleaver on research and improvements of mental health patient pathway – the intention behind the lighting is to allow a gentle stimulation; to create a calming environment for patients and make the space less clinical and institutional.

Our bespoke spectraglass project at 599 Lexington Avenue in New York City – completed last year with Tillotson Design. The ground floor upgrades were the recipient of an Award of Excellence from the 34th Annual IALD international lighting design awards.

Penn Station, NYC was shortlisted in two prestigious lighting design awards - firstly shortlisted in the 'Light Art-High Budget' category in the 2017 DARC awards - then secondly in The 2018 Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) masterworks awards - selected as ‘Best New Infrastructure’. Other projects in the category include the The WuLong LanBa Moss Museum by BPI & The Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience | Speirs + Major.
2016
We are pleased to announce that Broadgate Quarter has been shortlisted in the 2016 FX Awards, in the Lighting Design category. The Light Lab manufactured and installed this stunning bespoke atrium light feature at the commercial offices of Broadgate Quarter, based on original concept by Cundall & John Robertson Architects. The installation took place over a 6 week period, using our specialist installers, working alongside a team of abseilers, to ensure that each bespoke halo structure was installed as designed. This is our largest atrium lighting project to date, with the installation reaching almost the full length of the 50 metre atrium.
