Samsung KX

The Light Lab manufactured & installed a striking, bespoke ‘ribbon of light’ feature at the new Samsung KX experience space, situated within the contemporary Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross development by Heatherwick Studios.

Our specialist team worked to the initial concept by lighting designers Nulty, alongside architects KSS, interior designers Brinkworth & project managers Portview.
The bespoke arching ribbon of light, welcomes visitors to the space; providing the primary source of illumination.
It ‘serves to unify the many different areas of the space, bringing them together under one scheme’ Mondo Arc.
The project features in the Dec/Jan edition of specialist lighting magazine Mondo Arc, in which head lighting designer from Nulty, Anna Sandgren, describes how the initial brief was to ‘create a rational lighting solution for the space’, working to adapt to the shape of the building, with architecture always taking priority.
A key challenge to overcome was the size of the space, which The Light Lab undertook head on with their specialist knowledge and expertise in finding solutions to lighting design challenges – as Sandgren comments,
“A number of the manufacturers that we approached said it couldn’t be done because of the sheer scope of the space that we were dealing with. Thankfully The Light Lab had the vision to understand what we needed.”

A key solution in the Nulty lighting scheme is our bespoke feature, which ‘soars throughout the east and west retail showcases, unifying the two sections of the building.’
“The circular swoop of light travels up through the floor, walls and ceiling, to form a central architectural feature for Samsung KX. Visible from every aspect of Coal Drops Yard, the ribbon of light mirrors the curves of Heatherwick’s original design , while enveloping the space in a layering blanket of light.” (excerpt from Mondo Arc – read full article here)
